I am the daughter of Ronald Bowman. When my father left Illinois in the early 70's, he never looked back. He only returned to Illinois on 1-2 occasions after that day. It was hard to live without my father. My heart was broken when he left Illinois as I was very a very young girl and didn't understand why he left. Long distance from your children is never a good idea. However, I am very thankful for the times I did have with him & the memories we made. Thank you to Jack Lindstrom for reaching out to me & my father in Florida last year. I'm certain it meant alot to my dad.

Hello! This is Nita Campbell Schou's grandson. I never had the pleasure of meeting my grandma, but I know all of you did. I would love if anyone could reach out to me to tell me about her. Even the smallest story. She died when my mother was young, so even my mom doesn't have many stories about her. I'd love to learn more.  Thank you! My email is nlurquin@gmail.com

Our website is a treasure and we are all indebted to Jack. This is story of a class in a town named Sycamore, that we called home in our youth and some fortunate classmates still call it home. I wish there were a way to package it up to share with those who don't have a computer. Again, we all have some time on our hands (except my dear friend Sandy Hill who keeps on the move every day) so get your memories and thoughts down on paper - you all have something to share. For those without computers, letters can be sent to Jack.

Just a thought: Reunions are times to see old classmates and share memories from over the years. We learn that not everyone remembers the same things from events from long ago, but we all have our own memories from our places in time. Each of us from the class of 1956 should be getting these memories down on paper now since we have all become aware that we are all on borrowed time. Our memories of Sycamore, the place and the people, is part of the towns history. I see a book named "Memories of the class of 1956" - a compilation of the various sections of this website. After each bio, whatever memories you can add that aren't already here in Reflections, Then and Now, would be added. Right now this is all electronic, the compilation would also be in a one copy form for the library. We each have a story to tell and some of the memories that come up in a reunion should be put on paper. We all have found that retirement can get very busy but taking the time to chronicle our unique memories would be a reflection of the people and town where we  grew up. Start writing!

Who else was in the kindergaten morning class at Central School? There has to be someone hopefully ,who has a class picture in the family archives -- it was only 73 years ago! Kenny Davey and I were in it and I just found out Sandy was in that class. Kenny and I were "disciplined" for trying to kiss some girls. The classroom was in the southeast corner of the 1st floor.

Dear Classmates:  In case you haven't noticed, we have had nearly 41,000 hits on our class website.  Not bad for a class of 96 people (right now we are down to 75 living grads).  I've seen many class websites and I can honestly say none is as good.   We have Jack Lindstrom to thank.  It was his brainchild and he has nutured it for nearly a decade.  Clearly it has been a labor of love for Jack. Jack's birthday is coming up on June 14th.  He'll be 77.  I hope you will join me at that time to say Happy Birthday to Jack and to thank him for his remarkable work on the class website.

thanks for this site Jack. Keep e-mails coming. I am realizing precious memories these days. My husband of 54 years passed away last year. Many of you have had the same losses. I continue to enjoy tennis and my kids and grandkids every chance I can.  Have gone back to spending hours with a paint brush. Love the cabin in N.C mts. and winter in Chokoloskee Fl.  I well remember the halls of the old school and the young faces there.

I have been doing research for a family history I am writing.  I came across a note in The Sycamore True Republican that I thought classmates might find interesting.  It said that the Victor Bergquists (Dick Bergquist\'s family) had sold their home on North Maple Street and were moving to Sherman Oaks, CA.  Victor had taken a job as treasurer for Capitol Records of Hollywood, CA.

Karen told Jack and then the emails started coming. Thank you dear friends, and never underetimate the power of the internet. Take some time and look at the archives of the True Republican site that Jack has published. I have been looking at the war years issues and seeing the names of the young men and women who were in uniform.  The locals and personals, the advertisements -- 2, 3, then 4 digit phone numbers, prices of clothing and other consumer goods,  lots of history . Take a look!

It is great to read the story from Nancy Niewold about her memories of my mother and their time at Sycamore High School and after.
My mother died when I was very young (7 years old) and reading about her helps to fill in information that I never knew.
If other classmates of my mother have stories or pictures my sister and I would be very grateful to hear from you.

Although I am a 1978 graduate of SHS, I wanted to "check in" with all of you.  I have enjoyed visiting your website and looking at all of the pictures and memories you have preserved and showcased so well.

Sycamore was and still is a fantastic community.  I visit when I can, as I have many fond memories of growing up there.  Every kid should be so lucky to get the chance to grow up in Sycamore.

I especially enjoyed reading your section about Pete Johnson.  I agree... he was and still is an extrordinary man.  My father Don and I enjoy reflecting about the great times, the special times of our lives we spent in Sycamore... Pete\'s name always comes up as do  many others.  Pete was a mentor and role model to my father, myself, and all of us who knew him.  Thank you Pete!

Cogratulations for the honor Pete, that you so deserve and you will receive this weekend.  And thank you for caring, your leadership, and generosity to all of us in Sycamore over the many years.

I've traveled the world and lived in some wonderful places, but isn't it funny how the memories of growing up in a really nice small town like Sycamore resonates so strongly that those memories seem like they happened just yesterday.  Sycamore will always be home for me.  I'm 60 years old now.  Class of 1967.  I remember the kidnapping of Maria Rudolph when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade - I recall the centenial celebration when many of the men grew beards - Sycamore Park and Locust Street were my playground.  Family was born - and died in Sycamore.  Some still live there.  Maybe I'll go home someday too.

What a wonderful tribute to Sycamore!!  One thing that will always stick in my mind is the kidnapping of Maria Rudolph.  I was in first or second grade, but remember so vividly the entire community mounting horsebacl amd searching everywhere for her.  Although a very tragic ending - the community was strong together in their search efforts.
I will always remember the farmers (Kocher, Lindgren, Keyes, Mullins) coming to harvest our crops when our Father took sick.
Sycamore is the best kept secret in DeKalb County!!

Larry Linden has taken the laboring oar in creating a website for the SHS class of 1957.
We sincerely appreciate his efforts.
Larry had suggested that the classmates of 1957
view the website of the class of 1956  to
get ideas for the creation and continuation of our
website.  So, I thought I would take a few minutes
and glance at the '56 site.
So, I went online and retrieved the '56 site.  Well.............two hours later I was still fondly
recalling  the memories of my junior year
and the wonderful teachers, coaches, students and
friends. And, of course, Sycamore.
The site is terrific and the contributions by Gene Behler
really touched home.
Thanks '56

I am so sorry that I will miss the reunion this summer. Im having a reunion of my own. All of my bros and sisters, Janet, Jack, Shirley and Jim, and my daughters and other relatives will be coming here for a family reunion. We get together every two years. All five of us live in a different state. We had the last two at Oregon where Jack lives. That will be in MAy. In July, my daughter is taking me on a cruise to the Bahamas. Ive never been on a cruise and always wanted to do this. Janet told me not to miss snorkeling.
I know that this sounds far fetched now for those of you that live in the east, but I am opening my pool today and starting up the pump and filter. Its suppose to be over 80 degrees here today and for the next few days. My poor brother that lives  in Sycamore, say that he doesnt think that winter will ever end. I know that Jack L. feels the same after shoveling all that snow.  I have been in touch with  Roberta and she is in and out of the hospital. I also try to keep touch with John Florent and he also is not well. He is in and out of the hospital as well. Have a good reunion and I shall think of you all. Let the rest of us know how the 70 party goes.

I really enjoyed the article about Darlene Frantum. Once, when I was in grade school, I went out to their farm. I was outside, never having been to many farms. Two ducks were mating. I thought they were having a fight. She and her brother Bob laughed, and Darlene wispereed to me what was happening. Her face was bright red. I said OK and went home and asked my dad what all that meant. :))) I like Karens story as well. Her mom was a great lady. I used to go to Karens and we walked to school together. I knew her mother long after that, as she came to my beauty shop until I left Sycamore and a lady named Marge did her hair. Her parents were so nice, and polite. I stayed over at her house many times. As I read things people write, I have a lot of long ago memories.

I am really enjoying reading the memorial section as well as the photos. There is so much to say about our deceased classmates as we all have our own little memories of these people as well . I remember how nice everyone was to each other in those years. Things have changed so much ,but we were so lucky to have lived during those great years that .. I have had phone conversations with John Florent, Roberta Anderson and Bob Cambell. I could write quite a bit about Nita as we were good friends in 7th, 8th and we spent most of our summers at Lake Ripley together. We had some fun and funny times. After that we detasselled corn the next summer and after school was out, we made a trip to Ca. together staying with relatives. I hope to come back to Sycamore this Aug. if Roberta is able to have the reunion again. She says she plans to.

I am a member of the class of 1977. We also have a class website. Feel free to visit us. You can access it through the High School website. I wanted to let you know that a memorial section is very important, we also have one. I noticed that you have lost 13 members of your class; we have already lost 9 plus one that is missing, presumed deceased. That is a horribly high number for only 30 years out of high school. We suffered our first loss during our senior year, and our second the following year. Just these past three months we have lost 3 classmates. As we plan for our 30 year reunion we pray that we have no more losses. We will be paying special tribute to our lost members at our reunion (one of our members suggested the Navy's ceremonial tribute) and we are going to follow that. If you are interested in more information regarding this, contact me and I will forward the information to you. Susan Henry

What a nice memorial Carol wrote for Jim. , who was a class act. He was a great guy and I never knew anyone to have a bad word about him. How nice to hear from Dottie Peplow, Jo's sister. My brother ,Jack , went to school with Dottie and I believe she has a hand in getting the '59 reunions together. I spent quite a lot of time with Jo during and before our reunions. We were in town early and looking for classmates, not quite knowing where to start.

This is a great site and it's fun to see what some of you are doing in retirement. Joe tells me about your class reunions and the get-togethers you have inbetween. Nice to hear that you all stay in touch. Take good care to all of you.

I missed seein geach of you. Looking at the CD Jack sent (WOW what a nice presentation Jack) brought back more memories than I could imagine. I'm sure I will spend time with the Leaves (I still have a copy) and watching the CD when I retire. Certianly my best to all. the surgery was succesful. I can get into trouble again.

Our 50th Class Reunion was well planned, and we had a great time renewing friendships. The committee deserves a big THANK YOU for all the time and effort of making this the big success that it was. This web site is a super way for all of us to keep in touch, thanks to Jack, and all who support it. Thanks again! SALLY

It was so good seeing all who attended the reunion and those who weren't there, I thought of all of you and hoped that you are in good health and enjoying your 68th + or - a year, year on gods green earth. Its never too late to come to a reunion and never too late to drop a classmate be it snail mail or e-mail. As Gene Behler has so eloquently written, we grew up at a wonderful time. Following WWII, the whole country enjoyed a prosperity long absent . We were born at the tail end of the depression and after the war our families could now buy new cars and other consumer goods unknown in the 30s. We need to hear your memories and this is the place to do it. Joe

Sure is a blast reading all this stuff. Had a good chuckle. I'm still in Alaska, intend to stay here. Alaska wife passed away in 03. I get to Sycamore once or twice a year to see the kids and grand kids and Anita. Retired from Forest Service and went to work part time for Coast Guard as a construction inspector. My goal is to see as much of Alaska as I can. I'll be in Sycamore a week after the reunion. Sorry I'll miss all you junior high classmates.

Ozzie Kendall was about the next classmate that I wondered about . Also I wonder about Don Smith. I have talked to John Florent on the phone last eve. That was a nice surprise. We live about 450 miles away from one another. Not that far these days. I will see you all in two weeks.

Hello Class of "56" - My family moved to CA in 53 so I didn't have the pleasure of graduating with you. However, I went to school with some of you as early as kindergarten. I am really looking forward to seeing you at the reunion and getting reacquainted. Thanks to Gene for the great tribute to Sycamore and thanks to Jack for the "easy to use" website.

This is such a nice web site. My brothers and sisters and I have one similar called My Family. We keep in touch daily. All five of us live in a different state. I get in here weekly.

I can hardly recognize myself in the pictures. Thanks to Jack for all the work he has put in on this project. I hope to attend the 50th reunion in Sept - my first & only one - from sunny southern California(Palm Springs) after a summer of traveling.

I just reviewed all of the photos in the Photo Album. What a terrific walk down memory lane. It is very user friendly. That is, it is easy to get from one album to the next . Once in an album, you can click one button and it will scroll through all the pictures in that album. At any point you can stop and enlarge a picture. Great stuff! It just takes a few minutes to review all of the albums.

Hi. I'm Nancy Niewold's little brother Jim, class of 62. Being the youngest of five kids, Nancy the oldest, I can remember a lot of you sniffing around our house back then. My parents rarely missed a basketball or football game in town or away and I was usually with them. I remember especially that tall Foster kid looking around the basketball court like he was totally lost. I own and operate a retail store in Sycamore called The Clock Shoppe. If you get a chance, stop in and say Hi. I have lots of old Sycamore post cards.

Jack has done a great job with this website. While I wrote a few things for the site, Jack did the bulk of the work. He also did a fine job preparing a CD called "Reunions and More" which includes pictures of nearly everyone. I've seen it and it is very well done. The CD will be available at a nominal cost around reunion time. I think I can speak for nearly everyone when I say I am glad DWD ponied up the money for the plastic surgery.

This is even better than the last time I was here, which was months ago. These old photos are fun to look at and I wonder whatever happened to Patty Baker??? Anyone?

Hi Classmates, I'm really looking forward to seeing you all in September. I'm sure we're all going to be wrinkle free, slim, with our natural hair color, and will recognize one another immediately Love to all, Lauralee (Laurie)

It can't be 50 years! I'm not old enough! This web site is fantastic!! It's obvious that several people have put in a lot of thought and hours getting this organized and kept up to date. I especially enjoy the "then and now pictures". Many thanks to all involved. Keep up the good work.

Jack & Gene have definitely done a great job with this web site. Now I would like to see some more personal updates, real ones not fictional. We are now permanent Florida residents and would love to see and hear from more of youl We play lots of golf and love the Florida life style If anyone comes down this way give us a call. We are so lucky that two of our three daughters live here in Sarasota as well as our three grandchildren so we don't have to go back to cold country for the holidays to be with them. Our middle daughter still lives in Crystal Lake, teaches in Dundee, and plays professional football in Chicago, but comes down here for holidays etc. So we have the best of both worlds. Keep in touch classmates and actors. See you in Sept. Karen

What a delightful and well organized website! I always thought the class of '56 was above average and this proves it. May you continue to add to it for the next fifty years.
